AboutInitially Simon trained as a stone mason in York before studying stone carving at the London City & Guilds Art School, and then acquiring an MA in architecture at the University of East London. This background has given an architectural dimension to his work, which draws on the heritage of sacred architecture and the architectrue of the human figure to create his carved stone pieces. He mainly produces original artworks, which he designs and carves in stone. |

Biography / CVHaving continued the family link to carving stone, my attraction to stone carving began with his life early in his career. While he was studying conservation and restoration in Lincoln, I developed a love on Lincoln cathedral, its architecture and fine carvings. | |
Awards and Prizes2011 - Craft and Design Selected Award 2011 - Specialist Media - Simon was invited to Hatfield House Art and Design Event from 5th - 8th May this year where he exhibited the best of his commissioned work and ran short workshops for the public. He will be repeating this at the Blenheim Palace "Taste of Summer" event from 28th - 30th May 2011Specialist Judge Miriam Rose awarded Simon a GOLD AWARD on behalf of Craft and Design Magazine. 2003 - Ray Finnis Trust Award - an experimental project in cast glass carved stone and metal. Exhibited MA Art in Architecture graduate exhibition September. 2001 - Letter carving prize - awarded by City and Guilds of London art school. 2000 - The Margaret Ballardie - Travel Award, specific aim, take measurements from one of the heads of Canovas 3 Graces, with the aim of modelling and carving one the the heads. In conjunction with a plaster conservation-restoration job of a damaged plaster cast of the 3 Graces. 1995 - The Marzain Trophy, for hard work and dedication to the stone masonary course York College. | |
SymposiumsTraining initially as a mason in York, working as a mason in Stamford. Then further high level training as a stone carver at the London City and Guilds art school. In 2003, I acquired an MA - art in architecture at the University of East London, this affected my mind set with the work that I went on to produce. My carving work is heavily affected by the architecture around it, the links to sacred architecture and the architecture of the human Figure is continually apparent. | |
